About the talk
The hype around 4IR has highlighted the risk facing higher education institutions. It is quite simply a case of adapt or die! The rapid increase in access to technology, advances in digital learning, a student body who needs flexible learning options for work-study-life balance, and the boom of the knowledge economy have become a threat to didactic contact based teaching. Students require a different skillset to previous generations, where their future profession was guaranteed to still exist in 20 year time. Fostering the development of 21st century skills (adaptability, collaboration, problem-solving, innovative thinking, digital fluency, skilled communication, resilience etc) require a shift in pedagogy that is hard to achieve in massive lecture theatres. As libraries shift towards digital resources and artefacts, the physical spaces provide an opportunity to be re-imagined to promote 21st century skills. This talk will look at the story of the Wits eZone and how changing the learning environment has impacted the way teaching and learning happens in this space.
